I'm on the Front Page

When I was at the church there were a number of media outlets there for the event.  A friend just told me that the one media group that was there Radio Sarajevo has a picture on their front page (link below) and I am in it.  Here are the pictures I took from their website.  That is me standing in the grey hooded sweatshirt.

Some Additional Random Pictures

Here are some other pictures I took as I just walked around.  Also, I should note, that on the news I hear all about how much snow there is back home and how it is one of the coldest winters in a generation and here it is in the 50's.  Everyone here has been telling me how odd it is that it is this warm and how we only had the one snow storm so far this year.

Other Pictures from the Orthodox Christmas Eve

Since I was downtown for the Orthodox Christmas Eve I decided to walk around a little bit and take a few other pictures.  There are a few churches and mosques in that area.

First, here are a few pictures of the Gazi Husrev Bey's Mosque which is said to be the most important Islamic house of worship in all of Bosnia and was built in 1531

Second, is the Cathedral of Jesus' Sacred Heart which I believe is a Roman Catholic Church and was built in 1889.

Last was another Orthodox Church.  I do not have the name of it or any other information but they allowed me to take some pictures inside.  It was very nice but what I found most interesting was that they had a kiosk inside where they were selling religious items like candles, pictures of Jesus and Calendars.  That's actually why we went here, because the people I was with said they needed to pick up a calendar.  We walked by the kiosks out on the street and they went in the church.  I said to the person next to me, "I thought they said they needed a calendar?"  They said, "Yeah, they're inside."  I said, "They sell calendars inside?"

Orthodox Christmas Eve

Today is the Orthodox Christmas Eve.  I was invited to go to The Old Orthodox Church which was built in the 16th century.  Their tradition is to build a small pyre of branches and then light it on fire.  I am told this is supposed to bring good luck in the new year.  There was also a small manger with a sheep and a few baby lambs.

Lies, Fraud and Corruption part 2

Another funny thing that has been going on at the school is what this guy tells people they will earn if they attend his school.  We have classes for beginners, elementary, pre-intermediate, intermediate, upper intermediate and advanced.  Each one is broken into 3 segments ex: Intermediate 1, 2 and 3.  At the end of each semester there is a final exam and if you pass you are allowed to go on to the next level.  Good news is everyone passes, that way you get passed along and will pay to take the next level class.  At the end of each level 3 class there is supposed to be a more in depth or comprehensive final exam but there isn’t.  It is supposed to be this way because after each level three class you receive a certificate saying you have completed, lets say the Intermediate level of study and have tested proficient.  This certificate can then help you find a job if they require you to have a certain level of English proficiency.

There are just a few problems with this.  First, the exam is not comprehensive.  They are short and usually just questions where you choose the right word.  Even for the Advanced level classes there is no reading or writing portion.  Just sentences and you have to chose the correct word to complete it, or the words are mixed up and you have to put them in the right order to make a sentence.  Second, like I said, everyone, if they paid their full tuition, passes.  Third, the way they initially determine what level you are on is a complete fraud.  When you register you take an entrance exam.  This is supposed to say what level you are on so they know what group to place you in.  However, if you are tested and found to be in a higher group, in theory you will be in the school a shorter amount of time because you will need fewer classes.  So the guy will often place students a level or two below where they belong in hopes they will stay in the school longer.  I have now had a number of students who halfway through a semester request to be moved up into a higher level because they feel they are more advanced than the level they are placed in.  I have had adult students get mad at me because they feel the class is too easy for them and want to do more or move quicker and can’t so they get annoyed with the other students whose proficiency levels are not equal to theirs.

So, there is fraud involved in what level you are placed in so the guy can try to make more money.  Then students get passed along so they will keep coming and taking classes.  They then earn these certificates that say they have a certain level of English proficiency when they don’t.  So you end up having classes where some students are more advanced than what you are teaching and some are far behind where they should be.  I had one guy in my Upper Intermediate 2 class, no one else showed up.  I tried to do the Upper Intermediate 2 work with him and he had no clue what I was saying or what any of the questions were asking.  So without him knowing I made photo copies of other books to use.  I copied stuff out of the Intermediate book because I thought it would be more his level.  Even this he struggled with.  I was talking with the secretary one night and said this guy is in Upper Intermediate 2 and cannot even do the Intermediate 1 work.  She told me he has been coming here for a year (5-6 semesters) and gets passed right along and now I have him and he can’t do anything.  I feel bad.  I tried to learn French back in high school and was horrible at it.  I know it is difficult but to just pass people along so they keep coming makes the entire school in my opinion a fraud and at the very least illegitimate. (this is also one of the problems I have with the Philadelphia School District)

The secretary told me things are worse at the universities.  She is a law student and said she has seen a few things happen in her law classes.  First, if a student fails they can pay the professor and they will pass them.  Also, if the professor doesn’t like you, they may fail you, even if you pass, until you pay them.  To make it clear, this is a bribe because you have already paid your tuition.  She said some students never come to class because they paid the professor, whereas others sometimes fail multiple times until they agree to pay the professor.  She said a number of the professors have gotten caught doing this but they keep their job because then they have to pay the university or give a kickback to someone else.

I was telling this to the people I live with and they laughed because it is well known.  They said a lot of politicians will say what degree they have but it is all bogus.  In the US there are fake universities you can find online and for a fee they will mail you a diploma and transcripts for any degree and subject area you want.  The thing is if you Google the name of the college or university you will find that it is fake.  However, here, you get a “legitimate” degree from a “legitimate” school.  That would be like me giving $5000 to Rutgers and getting a Doctorate Degree in Education along with actual transcripts saying what classes I have taken.  I asked, how do you actually know then who did the work and who didn’t.  They said, you don’t.

This brings me to my last story about lying and fraud in my school (even though I can think of a few more, maybe some other time.)  Again, I was standing there one night just talking with the secretary and the phone rang and it was for the owner, who was actually there.  She gave him the phone and he went into a room and shut the door.  The secretary said to me, “he doesn’t want me to know what the call is about” but that she knew what it was about.  I asked what it was about.  She told me that the one woman who works there, and pretends to run the place and is the only woman who gets along with the owner, had a friend who applied for a job but they required that she had computer skills.  So the friend came up to the school and her and the teacher got on the computer and opened up the template we use for our certificate and changed around some of the information, so instead of it saying school for English they changed it to school for computer literacy, or something like that, and for course, instead of saying Intermediate 3 they put in a number of computer classes and printed it out.  She gave them some money and the owner agreed that if anyone called he would vouch for it; and someone called and he told them, yes, we offer computer classes and that this woman completed them.  Unbelievable.

Lies, Fraud and Corruption part 1

One thing that I have found to be very prevalent here is that people tend to lie a lot and there is corruption everywhere.  I have heard a number of things from people and found some out the hard way.  When I initially came here I was going to work in an English only private school and I was told I would start teaching in July during the summer session.  Not only was there no summer session, I later found out I did not even have a job.  I scrambled around some and found a job teaching at another school and started in mid-September.  Again, with this job I was told that I would have 4 classes a day and then tutor other students one-on-one.

Each semester is only 8 weeks.  The first semester I had 2 classes a day Monday-Thursday and then in October I tutored one student twice a week.  Then the second semester started and I had 2 classes twice a week and still just one student to tutor.  I was pretty pissed off when this happened.  The other teachers I work with told me the guy who runs the place tells everyone a different story and that is basically why no one stays there too long.  The only upside is we get paid.  One teacher I work with is from Ireland and he is here because his wife works for an international organization whose job it is to try and stop the corruption.  I was told the one public school here hired a bunch of teachers and then didn’t pay them.  They said they were hired on a trial basis and that they do not get paid for that trial basis.  of course they did not tell this to the teachers when they were hired.  Then, another school did not pay the teachers for the month of November.  The one politician said they did not have the money in the budget to pay the teachers.  The teachers make about 1200Km a month (equal to about $800) yet this politician makes 40,000Km a month.  So, I atleast get paid something and have been taking a bunch of graduate classes so I can get another degree so hopefully when I return I will not have to go back to Philly to teach.

Anyway, there are some other stories about lies and corruption that I have found interesting.  Part of the reason why I do not have all of the classes that I was told I would have is because the guy who owns/runs the school is completely incompetent.  Forget the fact that he is rarely ever there (we’re supposed to have a meeting every month but only had one in September because all of the other months he is never around so we cancel the meetings), or that when he comes in he is sometimes drunk, or that he treats the women like s*** (last week a few of the women were crying because of how he was speaking to them.)  2 teachers actually quit (one was a woman and also worked for the British Consulate, the other was the guy I mentioned from Ireland.  His former job was he was in the Irish Army.  I said, wow, so even though you are former military he broke you.  His reply was the owner is an absolute clown and he was tired of it and that he rather carry rocks from one end of Sarajevo to the other before he comes back and teaches any more.  I actually took over his and the other teachers classes for the last 2 weeks of the second semester.)  The guys sole job is to recruit new students, and he is a failure at that.  One, because like I said, he is rarely there.  Second, he tells people different information.  For one person he tells them one price, for someone else, who has a better job, he tells them a higher price so he can get more money.  Last semester I had a student who was a law student, he told me that if he goes to the market after work when he is wearing a suit and tie the people will charge him more money so now he only goes shopping after he changes his clothes.  Like food stores and shops have set prices but then there are markets (there is one close by that I would say is similar to the Berlin Market if anyone remembers that place.)  Anyway, you can buy everything at these markets clothes, food, electronics and then there are little stands throughout the city.  Now, if you look like a “regular” you can get a deal.  If you look like you might have money they will quote you a higher price.  Anyway, it's one thing to do this when you are selling produce, it's another thing when you are running a school.  Some of the students have found this out and have been asking for their money back.  Since we have some time off in January the guy was trying to make a deal that rather than refund their money he would just give them more classes, I was asked if I could teach some extra classes and I told him no.

I had a free period between two of my classes so I would stand around and talk with the secretary a lot.  She is a law student and has told me a lot about what goes on around the school and the city.  Another good story about the school, is the guy treats the women horrible, as I previously mentioned.  He does stupid stuff and then blames it on the secretary, like when he didn’t pay the electric bill.  The best story I heard is that the new secretary got hired at the beginning of September to replace the old one who quit.  The last secretary, who the guy also treated like crap, quit but took along the list of every student and then opened her own school and poached a large portion of the students by offering them discounted tuition.  That’s a brilliant idea, and if I was going to stay here longer, I would do the same thing.

Air Pollution

As with any city there is some air pollution.  When I worked in Philadelphia you could look up at the sky and see this brownish or grayish looking cloud just hanging over the city.  Most days, when it is sunny, I do not see any type of smog hanging over the city here.  However, on days when there is overcast I will hear people saying that the pollution is bad that day.  There was a story in the news recently about another city a few hours north of here that has a coal burning plant and the smog was so bad it looked like it was midnight even though it was mid-afternoon.  I have not seen anything that bad myself.  About two weeks ago we had a few days in a row of overcast and a lot of fog.  Everyone was saying it was all air pollution and not fog.  The one evening only a few students showed up and the other teachers were saying it was because of the poor air quality and that the news said for people to stay inside.

Now, I think I mentioned before that people here smoke everywhere.  We have a rule you are not supposed to smoke in the school after 4pm but no one seems to follow it, which annoys me.  I have heard people say that smoking isn’t bad for you (which funny side note, today there is an article on MSN that is was 50 years ago this week that the surgeon general released his report saying that smoking causes illness and death http://news.msn.com/us/historic-smoking-report-marks-50th-anniversary ) Anyway, a few of us are standing around talking because our students hadn’t showed up and two of the teachers are smoking.  Then when they got ready to leave they wrapped their scarves around their head to cover their nose and mouth.  When I asked them what that was for they told me so they wouldn’t have to breath in the bad air outside.  I said you just got done smoking where you were directly breathing smoke into your lungs and the air in here is now filled with smoke but your afraid of the outside air pollution?  Its worse in here then it is out there, and I started to laugh and laugh.  They didn’t find this bit of irony funny.
